The Ichiyo Ikebana School was founded in 1937 in Tokyo. Ichiyo emphasizes the importance of “ma” – a pause – between flowers, plants, and oneself. There is a “ma” in everything. It can be a space, time, a way of connecting, or balance, and people have different ways of feeling and perceiving things. The Ichiyo Ikebana School’s philosophy is to “be aware of the ‘ma’ (relationships) between oneself and all things, and to arrange flowers by capturing the qualities and expressions of plants, materials used, and spaces”.
